Ambient White is the first of a linked pair of sound design-based virtual instruments designed to provide composers and producers with a collection of original instruments and textures suitable for all sorts of ambient music. As its name implies, Ambient White covers the lighter end of the ambient spectrum, focusing on beautiful, peaceful, melodic, harmonious, and natural sounds. Ambient Black, the second VI in this series, will cover the opposite end of the ambient spectrum. The vast majority of the sounds used in the creation of Ambient White were derived from organic sources: found sounds and audio recordings subjected to extreme sound design techniques, prepared and/or heavily processed musical instruments, and sounds recorded in natural environments. The few synth sounds that were used were also processed with sound design techniques, and/or combined with various organic sounds and instruments. The end result is a product that combines acoustic, humanistic, and electronic elements to produce and organic-sounding virtual musical instrument.

When making the White Grand the production goal was to make a sampled Grand Piano that would work great in a mix but also deliver the dynamic response of a real piano. Using SLH, a developed software made it possible for us to record different velocities very precisely and from that build an instrument that delivered the same dynamic as the real thing. When we finished the White Grand, we had a sampled piano that didn’t just work in a mix, but worked on simply anything! The MkII: Since the samplers has been become more advanced and the White Grand still are one of our most popular pianos, we decided to bring it up to date and add some functions in the line of the original ideas. We also added hammerback and pedalnoise samples. Then we added our True Resonance feature and used Kontakts scripting facilities to make Real Time/True Pedaling, Sympathetic Resonance and some other nifty features, and, Voila: The White Grand MkII
