8-bit is the new cool! Weirdly, that seems to be as true today as it was back in 1984 when Korg launched their first digital drum machine, the SuperDrums DDM-110. Complete with 8-bit PCM samples, accent control, a sophisticated yet easy-to-use programming interface, and a DIN sync socket (no MIDI yet…), it was in many ways ahead of its time. The sound is far from naturalistic, but it’s got that typical 8-bit crunch and power to it that really sets a mix pumping, with the kick and snare sitting very well in all kinds of electro / house styles. The hats also tick over very nicely, with a bit of a fizz to the high-end courtesy of those crusty D-to-A converters. We’ve interpolated a medium Tom to go with the high and low ones, so you can do proper 80s-style drum solos! The key to the SuperDrums sound is the meatiness of its kit pieces. A bit of research reveals a frequency response that tops out around 7.5kHz, giving everything a super-compressed and surprisingly warm attitude with a great deal of weight. This is an ideal soundset for holding down more pumping, hi-energy styles. If you want laid-back, take a look at WurliBeat, because this certainly ain’t it!

What a cool old dirty drum machine!’– Me about the Yamaha DD-10 when I first saw it some years ago. This is really a charming lo-fi low cost 8-bit drum machine released in 1988 aimed at the home market and I really love it. I’m writing in first person because I wanted to get really personal about this one. This is one of my all time favorites and it’s the sample pack I use the most when it comes to drum machines.

Think wood and then more wood and then some more wood on top of that. The theme and purpose of this library is pretty simple. We wanted to capture as much sharp, bright, tonal wooden impact percussion as our hearts could desire. We captured several bamboo poles, bamboo logs (literally), a whole pile of claves, woodblocks, clappers, box drum, and other assorted wooden implements that epitomize the word “thwack.” These elements are ideal auxiliary percussion for orchestral composition and epic film/tv/game soundtrack scoring. They also are vital elements in Latin music and hip hop, as well as very useful percussion building-blocks and raw source material for experimental music and IDM.

You have 3 types of control (via the ‘Degrader’) over tape damage – via filter,amplitude or pitch, with a tape speed slider as well, so Boards of Canada style sounds are easily obtainable, or you can set the controls to zero to bypass the effect.
