Tremor: a software drum machine with powerful synthesis, effects, modulation and step-sequencing. DCAM circuit-modelled sound generation is fused with new ideas to produce original sounds with the punch and extreme sound pressure of old-school analogue. Tremor’s dance drums, funky beatscapes, abstract machines and undiscovered sonic terrain are suited to all kinds of electronic, urban and experimental music. Central to each of Tremor’s 8 synthesis engines is a specialized DCAM oscillator with harmonic partials akin to a drumskin’s modes of vibration. Mixed with a sub-oscillator and tuned noise source, the signal is sculpted by modelled drive/filter/FX sections and razor-sharp envelopes. Tremor’s diverse output includes classic kicks, snares and claps, organic hats and body-shaking subs alongside futuristic zaps, scrapes, textures and sounds that defy classification.

To be honest, when I first picked up Kiloheart’s Phase Plant, I was a bit hesitant.. Sure it gets lots of love from the community, and it seems like it can do a lot, but do we really need another Wavetable synth? After spending some time with it, I think, yes, perhaps? It seems we do actually do need that very much. Like, undoubtedly. Phase Plant goes pretty deep. Besides being one of the most versatile, modern and aesthetic subtractive synths available these days, it’s also very fun to work with. As an instructor I really love the attention to visual details, which makes it a great synth to use when learning about sound design techniues. Kind of like how a Ford Fiesta is a good car to learn how to drive in, but then it’s prettier. And it sounds better. Because it’s such a massive synth, we will need to take a structured approach in learning this thing. Therefore, we start at the very foundations of sound design and synthesis. Things like the Harmonic series, Unison, and other goodies. Once we get a better understanding on these concepts, we can take it a step further and dive into Oscillators, Wavetables, Granular, FM, Sampling, Modulators & Modifiers, all explained with a strong technical foundation. This will help you to fully understand these techniques and use them in any context.

Diva: Mastering Analog Synthesis

Diva models individual circuit components (you know? stuff like capacitors, resistors, transistors), not just overall behavior. This results in extremely accurate emulations of vintage hardware. It’s also the first virtual synth to use a modern circuit simulation technique, which models analog circuit behaviour with extreme accuracy. Did I mentioned already that this sounds very very good? Diva looks beautiful and perhaps pretty straightforward on the surface, but she can go very deep, and can be a little mysterious.. It’s really a musician’s synth, which means we want to adapt our mindset a bit when we come from a more ‘producer-like’ approach to sound design. That’s why I wanted to make this course, to teach you how to think about Diva and to show you how powerful this synth really is when we dive in.
