With real analog oscillators, famed Curtis low-pass filters, and analog VCAs, the Prophet ’08 is capable of reproducing the familiar sounds of its legendary predecessors. But modern features like a greatly expanded modulation matrix and additional modulation sources—such as three envelopes and four LFOs per voice—take it way beyond vintage gear and make it a worthy and unique addition to the Prophet family tree. Features include a gated 16 x 4 step sequencer, arpeggiator, split or stacked key modes with separate stereo outputs per layer, and rack ears for optional rack-mounting. The Prophet ’08 module can also be used as an expander to increase the polyphony of another Prophet ’08—keyboard or module—to 16 voices.

Keyboard workstations have always been something of a Korg speciality, ever since they created the concept almost 20 years ago with the M1. Does their latest offering, the M3, live up to its pedigree? About once a decade, Korg rewrite the rules for making music on affordable keyboards. In 1988, the M1 defined what we call a workstation. Nothing that it embodied was new: PCM samples, sequencing and effects had all been used in keyboards from other manufacturers, but the ‘AI’ architecture of the M1 did it more elegantly and more affordably than it had ever been done before. Then, in 1995, the Trinity introduced the combination of touchscreens, genuinely multitimbral effects, hard disk recording and digital I/O to the mainstream keyboard world. Not only was the Trinity radical in the way that it combined these technologies, but the price — as it had been for the M1 — was remarkable for such a groundbreaking product.

The 73 Stage Piano Collection finally brings the holy grail of electric pianos to you: The Fender™ Rhodes® piano. While other CDs have the sound of the Rhodes piano, they only have 1 or 2 samples per note. This way it’s impossible to let it sound real when you play it on your keyboard – you don’t have the dynamics of the original one. You’re not even close. Realsamples finally sampled one vintage Rhodes out of many units with 16 (!) multisamples per note!. To get the most natural sound, the piano was recorded directly from the pickup through the preamp section of a Mindprint™ DTC high-end preamp while bypassing any equalization to ensure the best sound possible. Recorded in 96 Khz and 24 bits resolution, the signal was downsampled finally to 44.1 Khz/16 bits for normal use. The CD set also includes ready-to-play presets for Steinberg™’s Halion® and Emagic™’s EXS24®. “Light” versions of the presets are included, too. No further processing has been applied to the CD, so you don’t get that over-processed sound of other sample CDs – just the great, deep, lush and full sound of a classic Rhodes piano.

The Orbit is first in E-mu’s new line of dance modules. This is strictly engineered for the techno artist. It has 8 MB of samples of all the great vintage analog sounds plus many familiar and typical sounds used in house, hip hop, trance, and techno. It includes an essential digital VCF-like filter that is (on many presets) usually controlled from the modulation wheel on your keyboard controller! It’s great for filling tracks with lush sweeping pads, or trancing along a 303 bassline pattern and filtering away. It is a beautiful golden single-space rack unit with a big easy to read LCD. Its sounds are, well they’re digital so they are a little harsh and ‘tinny’ but add a little ‘verb and some delay and it sounds damn good! It is already being used by lots of techno artists around the world including Todd Terry, Roni Size, ATB, and Orbital.

A fresh library based on the Interactive Phase Distortion principle. The Casio VZ10m and the German Hohner HS2/E are the last hardware synths featuring iPD. The iPD synthesis was meant as an effort to simplify sound programming because its results are easier to predict when comparing to FM synthesis. IPD is capable of producing bright and lively tunes with sharp attacks and digital precision. The Library contains 30 instruments featuring “filter-less” and “non-substractive” sounds that stand out thru their rich harmonic content and agile brightness. Polite 800 introduces another famous eighties synthesizer: the Korg Poly 800. This little leight-weight plastic thing was meant to be a performance synthesizer because it can run on batteries, has guitar strap pegs and inverted key colors. On the other hand programming this thing isn´t really a performance because like the majority of the budget synths of this time the Poly 800 has to be conquered with nothing more than a number block plus an increase and decrease button. The Universal Pack contains 32 multi-sample patches that load into numerous software samplers like Kontakt (NI), NN-XT (Reason). EXS 24 (Logic), Directwave (IL) as well as each other software sampler that supports the Cakewalk sfz format.
