This is our tribute to the king of real drum recording, Roger Nichols, and his enduring legacy in the world of music. The Wendel is not just a computer system, it’s a 75-pound blue box, masterfully crafted by none other than Roger Nichols, a digital recording pioneer and recording engineer extraordinaire known to all as “The Immortal.” As people, companies, and even artificial intelligence increasingly sample Wendel Jr. beats and produce sounds, we felt the need to share the original, untouched sounds that helped shape Steely Dan’s iconic style. The flawless and deeply human drum tracks created from the samples Roger so masterfully recorded for Wendel continue to embody Steely Dan’s unique sonic signature.
