Understand What Layering Is And How To Use It With Claps, Basses, Hi Hats, Kicks in & More!
The heart and soul of electronic music is Bass. It pumps the speakers and warms the sound up so that it can be felt by your listener while they groove with your track. If your bass isn’t hitting right and isn’t capturing your listener, your tracks will never be heard by the mainstream market. Artists like Wolfgang Gartner, Zedd, Skrillex and Knife Party rely on their drums and basses to make their tracks huge and impactfull.
In this class we will be using Ableton Live’s drum rack to layer different sounds on top of each other to create powerful and personalized drum kits. We will be looking at kick drum, snare and clap layering as well as some grooves to put our work in action. Create your own layered drum kit and post a groove or song you created using your drums. If you are able to resample your drums feel free to post the samples for your classmates to use.

The info can be applied to any hardware or software synth! Sami starts by explaining the basic idea behind layering sounds, and gives you some examples of the technique. He then shows different methods for reinforcing your existing Bass sounds. Next, Sami reveals how to add fullness to your synths by layering unlike sound sources and processing them as one sound. Effects are then explored as ways to make synths more dramatic and alive. Wrapping it up, Sami shows how to make a bass sound bigger by adding different elements, both subtle and obvious to a mono bass patch.
