The samples were recorded in a world class studio through the legendary SSL 4000 console and the finest pre-amps in Europe using 3 pairs of the top quality microphones such as legendary AKG C12, Brauner Valvet and Neumann U-87 placed in an acoustically precise room in order to obtain the genuine piano sonics. ThaLoops team has succeeded in recording the deep, warm, powerful sound of the Steinway Grand Piano B211 model.

Our Montclarion Hall Grand Piano is a classic Steinway 1926 parlor grand. It was captured in three microphone positions (close, mid and far), to allow custom and surround mixing. It has a crisp, solid tone ideal for classical composing, as well as soul, jazz, rock and pop. It also contains a broad string effects section including glisses, sweeps, slams, plucks and more. The Montclarion Hall Piano was recorded in a steep A-framed long hall that truly resonates with us. It was the same room that we recorded Mars, Venus and the Apocalypse Percussion Ensemble in. It has a lush, rich, clear and yet well-defined and well-controlled natural sound. In our ears, something about this magical room combined perfectly with this piano, creating the right holistic balance that felt both instantly inspiring and somehow unique. The true instrument here is the piano and the hall, as one singular being.

Austrian Grand piano was sampled from a 100 year old Bruder Mikula Wien Austrian grand through a pair of AEA R84 ribbon microphones into an AEA TRP ribbon microphone preamp. Prior to recording, the piano’s hammer felts were sanded down to warm them up a bit. The piano was sampled in stereo under the lid, because that’s where the tone sounded best, at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. It took many weeks to sample the piano entirely, as it was in such a state that most of the tuning pegs could no longer hold a pitch for any length of time. The piano was sampled labriously, with the softest to loudest dynamics being played, resulting in a library that can boast 10 velocity layers and 2 note round-robin.
