The Resonance of Early Electronic Music

Gong Amp takes an exciting experimental amplifier from the beginnings of electronic music to the plugin world of today. In 1932, Maurice Martenot was looking for a way to make his groundbreaking proto-synthesizer “Ondes” audible beyond what could be archived with the horns and loudspeakers of the time. He developed a set of “diffuseurs”, of which the “Métallique” was one. Instead of a paper cone or horn, Martenot put a gong behind the amplifier circuitry. This seemingly simple idea resulted in resonances and brilliant overtones that excite audiences to this day.

Epic bronze gong drum library sampled in pristine clarity. A highly versatile virtual instrument that ranges from intimate taps to ringing mallet booms. This is a pristinely recorded, deeply sampled library of a ceremonial bronze gong drum from South East Asia. This particular drum was in the ground for most of its lifetime as a ceremonial drum, only to be disenterred for ancestral and other rituals in the local village. It was brought back to the UK by renowned South East Asia expert and anthropologist Andrew Turton, during his studies there in the 1970s. It has since been in his private collection of artefacts and musical instruments from the region. The drum was recorded dry. The library is highly playable, with left hand and right hand separately mapped for easy playing and programming of rolls and crescendi. The custom UI interface allows for control of Sustain, Tape Saturation and subtle Low End control as well as Reverb amount and size.

This CD includes a unique collection of gong sounds. You will be impressed how many colours these big and heavy disks can offer, depending on it’s diameter, form and the striking tecnique. The CD is devided into four different parts. For the standard use you will prefer to sample from the first two parts, and for pop, tekkno or experimetal avant garde you will scroll to one of the last two parts that offer some realy wild stuff! The first part offers a sound set being recorded at the Propeller Island Studios in the finest stereo quality, using customized high end microphones close to the gongs. Sometimes you can hear clearly the clicking of the mallet when beating the gong. The second part’s gong set was recorded at the famous Salvatore Church in Berlin, offering the very nice ambience of this room.The microphone position was about 30 meters off the gongs for an optimum of sound developement.
