A felt piano, reimagined into beautiful ambient soundscapes

Building on the success of Tureis for Kontakt, I’ve now recreated Tureis for the free Soundbox player. Tureis is an Instrument close to my heart, featuring three deeply evocative presets perfect for creating emotional ambient soundscapes. I created Tureis using our beloved Yamaha U1 upright felt piano, an instrument that has been part of our family for many years. Renowned for its rich, resonant sound and impeccable craftsmanship, the Yamaha U1 is a favorite among pianists for its expressive, warm tonal quality and responsive touch. Situated in the middle of our lounge, it’s always ready to be played, filling our home with music and memories. To capture the essence of Tureis, I recorded single notes and phrases with two microphones positioned just 15cm above the hammers, with the felt pedal engaged. I then set about recording the intimate, warm sounds that make this piano so special.

Suitable for every use

This collection of pianos offers you the right piano for every situation in everyday studio life and, with its clever processing options, is sure to provide the right piano sound for your music. The piano set consists of 4 different pianos: Walnut (typical sound), Felt, Peculiar (a special and unique sound), and Cologne (an experimental sound). We recorded all articulations as elaborately as possible with many different microphone setups, from complex setups with stereo tube microphones/large condenser/ribbon microphones to stereo coles pairs, small condensers in the bottom and contact microphones. We then incorporated the best three results per articulation into the respective piano. We enhanced each piano with sophisticated processing options, ranging from simple EQs and filters to resonance reverbs, compressors, reverse sounds, and a granular machine. If a picture is truly worth a thousand words, we think of THE FELT SEILER in the same way, only in a musical context, instead – you can convey so many different emotions only with a few strokes of your hands. Nothing too complex or “puffy”, yet powerful and moving enough to allow you to express yourself freely, with nothing holding you back. The content of the library was recorded in the Sofia Session Studio B with a number of close microphones, later summed into one microphone position. Along with that, The Felt Seiler contains 3 more synth/sound design layers for you to choose from, which will help you shape a unique sound. We’ve named those three layers based on the mood that feels closest to the way they sound – Warmth, Ache and Loneliness. For all 3 of those, you have the option to Purge (the ON/OFF button on top of the volume slider), Solo or Mute each of the layers.

ALT PIANO is the complete and unabridged big sister to our infamous Upright Felt Piano. We recorded an old, humble and character-filled upright piano from the 60s, with and without felt making this a piano with two very different characters. Soft and beautiful or bright and lively, or blend between the recordings to achieve a tone unlike anything else. We also re-recorded the piano samples in three distinctly different and unique ways to create a series of textural sound layers, which can be mixed with the natural piano or used on their own. With dozens of other unique and interesting controls, you can create a very diverse range of sounds all from just one instrument.

Free Kontakt instrument library Released by Media composer Jon Meyer featuring the sounds of a Kawai BS-30 upright piano. I sampled my Kawai Piano with the felts engaged for that dark, moody, quiet vibe. Neumann KM84’s provide the focus, U47 clones bring the hype and width with Coles 4038 Ribbons on the back for a nice round, clear low end.
