Viva freaktronica! This month’s Electronic Sound cover stars are the legendary Faust, the wildest and weirdest of the 1970s krautrock outfits. We’ve interviewed all of the surviving original members of Faust for our cover piece, which starts in Hamburg with two trios combining into a single unit and ends in Munich just five years later, when the police arrest half of the band at Giorgio Moroder’s studios as they try to complete their fifth album. It’s a madcap story of counterculture abandon, disregard for music industry standards, inter-group personality clashes on an epic scale, and the pursuit of bold and brazen new sounds. It’s one heck of a read.

We’ve been talking to Steven Wilson about his new album for the latest issue of Electronic Sound and we have a special limited edition cover based on the artwork concept of the record for our subscribers and our webshop. To accompany the magazine, we also have a red vinyl seven-inch boasting exclusive edits of two tracks from the album. Steven Wilson’s ‘The Future Bites’ is a significant milestone for the former Porcupine Tree man and celebrated sound architect. Following on from his highly praised 5.1 surround sound remixes of artists such as Tangerine Dream, Roxy Music, Simple Minds and, in the last few months, Ultravox and Tears For Fears, ‘The Future Bites’ is a truly outstanding collection of electronic and art-rock tracks. The lyrics of the album meanwhile explore how we’re being constantly prodded by the internet’s mercilessly efficient and ever-evolving alogrithms, telling us what to buy, where to go, what to think, and who to vote for. Was the future meant to be like this? Probably not.

We’re going in search of Daphne Oram in the new Electronic Sound. We’re taking a road trip from the hallowed turf of the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios to the leafy environs of rural Kent, where Oram lived and worked in a converted oast house for over four decades, then heading back to London to see her Mini-Oramics machine in action. Along the way, we delve into her archives to tell the story of the founder of the Radiophonic Workshop and try to fill in the gaps in what we know about the first lady of British electronic music.

This month’s Electronic Sound cover star is Jason Pierce, aka J Spaceman, the main man of cosmic kings Spiritualized. We have a fantastic seven-inch – dual speed and white vinyl – featuring tracks from the band’s extremely rare ‘Pure Phase Tones For DJs’ EP to accompany the magazine too. We’ve had Jason Pierce in our sights since the announcement of the Spaceman Reissue Program, which sees the re-release of VIP editions of Spiritualized’s first four albums, including ‘Pure Phase’ and ‘Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’. Jason has always been a high quality interviewee and we found him in terrific form, happy to chat about whatever we threw at him and serving up a cracking Kraftwerk tale along the way.
