Hand chimes are musical instruments which are rung by hand, similar to handbells. Typically, they are tuned square tubes with an external clapper mechanism. The hand chime is characterized by a soft, clear, sonorous tone. A rich sustain of up to 20 seconds or more is carefully recorded with 24 bit / 96 kHz high resolution sound quality. By sampling three sustains for each scale, it corresponds to RoundRobin which produces different samples each time, and it is possible to play a more natural hand chime sound. In addition to the regular hand chime, the recorded patch also contains the “E. piano” patch optimized for use as an Electric piano plus the “Glocken” patch optimized for use as a glockenspiel.

Wind chimes are chimes constructed from suspended tubes, rods or other objects and are often made of metal or wood. Wind chimes are usually hung outside of a building or house and are intended to be played by the wind. Sound can be produced when the tubes or rods come in contact with a suspended central clapper, in the form of a ball or horizontal disk, or each other. Wind chimes may be used to observe changes in wind direction, depending on where they are hung. The Microhammer wind chime collection is made from a selection of different wind chimes, however sampled in detail so the user can control the amount of chimeniness and use them as percussive instruments. We recorded both big metal wind chimes, small tiny triangle wind chimes and hollow wooden chimes.

Wind chimes can be incredibly useful for colouring an ambience with subtle harmonics – I used them to great emotional effect as a nostalgic/memory device in the war film Home by Christmas. But they are also incredibly rewarding as source material for creating ambient textures and drones via processing. Bell trees and mark trees have been used over the years for many forms of ‘magical’ sounds, but their rich harmonic content does not limit their application to Disney impressions. Recorded at 192kHz using four microphones with extended high frequency response (Sennheiser MKH800, MKH8050 and a pair of MKH8020s) this library contains a wealth of rich harmonic material, including eleven different wind chimes, ten percussion instruments (bell trees, mark trees, chime bars, glockenspeils) and four sets of bells (including some classic sleigh bells for any Christmas applications!)
