The “Ancient Bowed Psaltery” is an Instrument Sample Library for Native Instruments’ Kontakt 5. The recorded instrument has 21 strings attached to a triangle shaped corpus made of thin wood. The psaltery is a member of the harps- and zither-family which dates back to the first half of the 13. century. First it was played by plucking the strings with the fingertips but later in the early 20. century it was played with small bows not longer than a cubit.

The Bowed Bucket is what happens when you hammer together an big fat instrument out of a 5 gallon plastic bucket, a wooden 4×4 beam, bass turners and cello strings. The bucket was fitted with tuning lugs and then holes were drilled out to allow individual strings to pass through, using the bottom wall as the bridge, so that sound projected outward and down. Then a 4×4 wooden beam was affixed to the bucket and the strings were then stretched up the heavy wooden neck, roughly nailed in place and hand -tuned. Remember that old string and paper cup trick from when you were a kid? Yeah, think bigger.

The nylon is threaded under the piano’s strings, and the performer can coax a sustained tone from the piano. The resulting sound is organic, shape-shifting, massive, foreboding yet delicate. The sound of the Bowed Piano is incredibly versatile, very musical and completely unique. It seems to strike a middle ground somewhere between a synthesizer pad and a stringed instrument and manages to sound like neither. It is a sound that adds space and movement to a composition and brings a magical, shimmering high end and baleful, evocative character.

Welcome to Bowed Grand Piano – a library decided to deep sampling of bowed and FX based grand piano strings. The bowing of a piano is a delicate effort, since the instrument is not designed to be bowed. We developed a variety of new recording techniques that allowed us to get deep inside the piano and record a variety of bowings and FX that haven’t been covered in previous libraries. The library is more ambient then oue Plucked Grand Piano, since the concept of bowed piano tends to go in the more ambient/drony direction. We bowed every single string on a world class grand, including both sustains and staccato notes.

The 3 main patches consist of unique one shot recordings all of which vary in length and timbre. The DRONES PATCH contains grisly low end material, the WHINES PATCH contains higher pitched scream like material, and the HITS PATCH contains various metal fence poles and wire which we hit with the bow while recording. The HITS PATCH has 6 unique hits all with 4 x RR!  As a bonus, we processed the heck out of these recordings by mangling their speed, EQ, and timbre to create a series of 14 processed PAD patches which would accomodate making creepout / tension beds. These all loop with a low pass filter mapped directly to the mod wheel, the timbre of these can totally change at the flick of a finger. In addition to the processed PADlike material, we also included a series of 5 percussive / impact patches which are well suited for accent or trailer hits. The GUI is highly tweakable as you have direct access to the Lo, Mid, and Hi EQ, Pitch, Reverb (with 13 original IRs), and a GRIT knob for distortion

SonicCouture Bowed Gamelan MULTiFORMAT

Following a Soniccouture tradition of playing instruments the wrong way, we present this unique library of a Bowed Gamelan instrument. This library is actually made from just one instrument of the gamelan ensemble, the ugal. This is pitched in the middle of the gamelan range, and so is quite versatile and generally leads the gangsa section of a traditional Balinese group. This instrument has 14 keys which cover a range of almost 3 octaves. The metal Ugal keys were bowed using a standard cello bow, vertically across the thin edge of the metal. Instead of a conventional microphone, a Trance Audio Trance Inducer contact mic was used. This gives the sound an incredibly detailed, surgical scraping quality.
