If I’ve got tracks that need more vibe, more color, and less of the fast, sharp transients digital is famous for, Omega Transformer plugins are my weapon of choice. Transformer plugins are extremely cool on their own, giving my VI’s, loops, and found sounds the character of carefully chosen, boutique analog circuits. When a Transformer is used on tracks recorded with the Omega Preamp, the effect is quite stunning: a dead-on replication of the original hardware’s sonic signature. This is not “sounds kinda like…” this is “sounds exactly like”. Transformer plugins are very simple to use — just turn the Intensity knob and a lovely, distinct flavor unfolds. The resulting Transformed tracks mix easier, sound sweeter, give EQ’s more mojo to extract, and feed compressors a rounder, punchier transient to play with. The result is, to my ears, a truly magical Transformation.

The R2 reverb plug-in is a reverb with attitude. In many ways, it harkens back to classic reverbs of the 80’s and 90’s. The reverb tail is fat and full of movement. The chorus controls can even add subtle (or unsubtle) pitch effects. Whether it’s a choir or a power ballad, R2 adds a rich character to the mix. But it doesn’t end there. Like its little brother PhoenixVerb, R2 can also create rooms and plates of its own. The gate control has found special applications as an auto-ducker for dialog mixers or even for traditional mixes keeping the reverb under control. R2 is a traditional reverb with a modern attitude. R2 has also been designed with ease of use as a primary concern. The most important parameters are always available, and a richer set of controls are available only a click away. There seem to be two types of mix engineers: those who own a pair of the original units this plug is inspired by, and those who want to. I can’t give you the original, but I can give you my twisted take on it. For starters, I tweaked the distortions to make them fuzzier, because I have a fondness for dirt & grime. I added a 250Hz sidechain HPF option which leaves all bass frequencies uncompressed, as well as a 6kHz sidechain ‘push’ to smooth out harsh, aggressive stuff. Most compressors press sounds back, this one pushes them forward. The original is in every million dollar studio, now my version can be in yours

There’s a reason the eq that inspired this plugin has endured 45 years of musical fashion & trends: it does all the right things to sound. But even a stunning classic isn’t safe from my meddling tastes! For starters, this eq’s curves are a bit tighter than the original. Next, I added a Saturation knob to overdrive a customized op-amp. That knob generates a very creamy, lush distortion, I’ll often use the Sat on its own, no EQ’ing. It’s fat, and very much a signature Sly-Fi sound!
