ARP 2600 V is a faithful recreation of one of the most versatile and iconic synthesizers of all time. Learn this semi-modular synth inside and out, with this in-depth course by trainer and producer Rishabh Rajan! Created in the early ’70s by Alan R. Pearlman (his initials is where the name ARP comes from) with David Friend and Lewis G. Pollock, the ARP 2600 is considered by many to be the holy grail of analog synthesizers. Heard on countless records (Stevie Wonder, Genesis, The Who, Jean Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode to name a few), this semi-modular analog monster was even used to create the voice of R2-D2 in Star Wars. And now you too can use the ARP’s synthesis power directly in your DAW. But let’s be honest, this powerhouse synth has quite a steep learning curve. That’s why we asked synthesis master Rishabh Rajan to create this in-depth course and demystify this super deep instrument. Rishabh begins the course with an overview of various modules and explains the normalled routing of the synth. Then, he focuses on the oscillator section, revealing the differences between VCO 1, 2 and 3 and explaining how oscillator sync works. The further you dive in the course, the more you discover its infinite sound design possibilities. The Filter, the Envelopes, effects and mixer are all covered in detail and demonstrated with numerous patching examples. You also get a detailed look at the sequencer, the LFO section, the Global section and a lot more.

I’ve collected a number of vintage synthesizers here at The Electronic Garden and the ARP instruments are among my favorites. ARP existed to give Moog a run for his money with affordable, stable and powerful synthesizers, string machines and even a stand alone sequencer. Even now, these instruments perform surprisingly well, and have become sought-after on the secondhand market, fetching ridiculously high prices. I’ve seen ARP 2600s going for six grand in recent months. Wow!

It works on all my handsets however the load may be pushing the limits. A tablet version of this with modified high res graphics will follow. You have been warned: this is a little over-the-top for a phone but seriously good fun. Forks is a unique Kontakt 5 instrument that uses a deeply programmable interface to combine both acoustic and synthetic elements to create sublime new sounds for composers and sound designers. At it’s heart Forks is based on an extensively sampled collection of scientific tuning forks that have been used and abused and played in unique and creative ways, all captured in pristine 96kHz clarity. A plethora of thuds, rattles, jangles and buzzes all make appearances here in addition to the traditional pure ringing tones tuning forks are known for. These acoustic samples were then heavily processed and twisted to produce companion sounds that can be layered and added to the acoustic elements along with raw waveform samples from an Arp 2600 synthesizer. This makes it possible to create anything from detailed electric pianos and vibraphone-like tuned percussion to otherworldly soundscapes and pads. The included presets take advantage of this diversity and showcase the breadth of sounds that are possible while being easily tweakable from the logically laid out front panel.
