A felt piano, reimagined into beautiful ambient soundscapes

Building on the success of Tureis for Kontakt, I’ve now recreated Tureis for the free Soundbox player. Tureis is an Instrument close to my heart, featuring three deeply evocative presets perfect for creating emotional ambient soundscapes. I created Tureis using our beloved Yamaha U1 upright felt piano, an instrument that has been part of our family for many years. Renowned for its rich, resonant sound and impeccable craftsmanship, the Yamaha U1 is a favorite among pianists for its expressive, warm tonal quality and responsive touch. Situated in the middle of our lounge, it’s always ready to be played, filling our home with music and memories. To capture the essence of Tureis, I recorded single notes and phrases with two microphones positioned just 15cm above the hammers, with the felt pedal engaged. I then set about recording the intimate, warm sounds that make this piano so special.

The Hammered Dulcimer is a high fidelity sounding string instrument with 31 pairs of strings. Its sound is well-known in film scores and in ethnic Arabian music. It is a wonderful instrument to enrich your music with lovely strings’ shining and glimmering sound. The Hammered Dulcimer is a stringed instrument with 31 string pairs stretched over a trapezoidal soundbox. Usually, the Hammered Dulcimer is set on a stand in front of the musician, who holds small wooden mallet hammers to strike the strings. The dulcimer has two bridges, a bass bridge near the right and a treble bridge on the left side. The bass bridge holds up bass strings, which are played to the left of the bridge. The treble strings can be played on either side of the treble bridge; playing them on the left side gives a note a fifth higher than playing them on the right. The strings of a Hammered Dulcimer are found in pairs, two strings for each note. Each set of strings is tuned in unison and is called a course. As with a piano, using multiple strings per course makes the instrument louder. However, as the courses are rarely in perfect unison, usually it results in a chorus effect – such as with a mandolin.

THE POP HARP FOR EVERYONE

We built the Autoharp from scratch. So, we have here a newly designed Autoharp with many new articulations and vast possibilities. It’s a perfect instrument to give your music a subtle highlighted shape. WHAT IS AN AUTOHARP? The Autoharp was invented at the end of the 19th century by Charles F. Zimmermann, a German immigrant in Philadelphia. It is a stringed instrument and, despite its name, the Autoharp is not a harp. In fact, this instrument is a chorded zither with 36 steel strings stretched over a soundbox. It has a series of chord bars that, when pushed down, mute all the strings other than those that form the desired chord. By doing so, you can easily play chords. It’s a perfect instrument to give your music a subtle highlighted shape.

The Zither has a rough and dirty sound, often described as “mellow”. We handled the Concert Zither harshly: We plucked, stroked and strummed all the strings to get every possible sound, noise and articulation the Zither can produce. Finally, we assembled six different patches. The Concert Zither is a perfect supplement to all the other Strings instruments: rare and unique.

The word “monochord” literally means “single-stringed”. It is an instrument with many strings of the same length stretched over a wooden soundbox, all tuned to the same tone. If you slowly pass your hands alternately over the strings without a break, you get a long-lasting sound that is rich in overtones. The word “monochord” means literally “single-stringed”. It was first constructed 2500 years ago by Pythagoras for basic experiments on harmonics. It was a simple wooden plate with only one string in those days.
 Today, the Monochord is an instrument with many strings of the same length stretched over a wooden soundbox, all tuned to the same tone. If you slowly pass your hands alternately over the strings without a break, you get a long-lasting sound that is rich in overtones. Our German Monochord has 21 strings, one string tuned one octave lower. All strings are tuned to B.
