“Surmandal” also known as “Swarmandal” is a small Indian harp.

It is generally used to accompany vocalists playing arpeggios and notes with the right thumb in Hindustani Classical music. The Surmandal was used in The Beatles songs “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” and “Within You Without You”, plucked with a guitar pick like we have done here with the Indian Surmandal sample library.

The Persian Santur is a trapezoid shaped instrument with 72 strings and a 3 octave range. Similar types of instrument could be found all over the world; “Santoor” in India, “Yang qin” in China, “Hammered Dulcimer” in England and “Hackbräde” in Sweden. They are all slightly different in the amount of strings and the timbre but with similar constructions. We have sampled the Persian Santur with 2 types of mallets in 3 velocities, “Santur 1” (hard mallets) and “Santur 2” (soft mallets). You also get a huge set of different glisses, fx both tonal and percussive divided into 6 programs.

The Santoor/Santur is a flat shaped instrument in the form of a trapezoid that means it is wider at one end and short at the other end. It is a wooden box that is broader in size low pitch notes and is tapered at the other side for the high pitched notes. The Indian Santoor used in this sample library was carefully crafted in Delhi, India. It has 31 notes in units of 3, resulting in a total of 93 strings. You will surely appreciate the full resonance and the crystal clear character of the sound generated by this instrument. The Indian Santoor is 3 octaves from C2-C5, with four velocity layers and four round robin hits (round robin in Kontakt and EXS24 format only) for a very sensitive and natural playability. We have also recorded clusters and FX.
