    Studio Drum Machines

We wanted to combine classic drum machines ( 15, to be exact ) with the the organic ambience and warmth of studio recorded drums. So, we took a club PA to two different studios, turned it up really loud, and recorded the results: through high-end mics, vintage consoles, valve pre-amps, bass-amps and even acoustic drum shells.

Way back in August 2005, two sound designers called James Thompson and Dan Powell, freshly adrift from the R&D centre of a well known japanese music company, collaborated with Native Instruments on a library called ‘Kontakt Experience’. A lot of material was created for this project, and only a certain amount was released by NI. Dan and James decided to release the remainder under their own brand – Soniccouture. The library of effects and atmospheric synthesis was named ‘Abstrakt Vol.1’. A basic website was put up; offering CDs for sale via paypal – this was before the days of large downloads. Sales started to come in, and the rest is history. Soniccouture went on to become pioneers of downloadable sample libraries, offering the service before any of the larger companies. Soniccouture’s ethos of creating unusual sample libraries of exotic sounds and instruments controlled by creative custom KSP scripting proved very popular, and has spawned many imitators over the years.

“Log Drums” or “Slit Drums” are hollow percussion instruments found in many aboriginal cultures around the world, particularly Africa and Southeast Asia. Typically made from wood, the instrument consists of a box or log with slits or tongues carved into it to produce notes when struck. Despite the name, the instrument is in fact an ideophone or “lamellaphone”, since the body of the instrument itself vibrates when struck.

We found our Thunder Drum on an obscure island somewhere in Indonesia, but they are available in many countries around the world. A Thunder Drum is made with a spring attached to the skin, so when it is shaken the spring moves and creates a continuous resonance through the body of the instrument. This results in a sound very much like thunder. The drums come in various shapes and sizes, and are sometimes known by other names such as Thunder Tube, Spring Drum, or, Thunder Maker. For this instrument we recorded a variety of rumbles, peals of thunder, strikes, and special effects using contact mics. As the samples were intended to be manipulated, pitch shifted and mangled, the recordings were made at 96 kHz. The sounds can be pitched very low and still have some interesting high frequency content when working at full resolution.

The Canterbury Suitcase, a new virtual Rhodes instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt Player. Back in June of 2012 we were recording Grand Marimba at Canterbury Music in Toronto. Studio owner Jeremy Darby was showing us his collection of vintage instruments, and let us try his Rhodes Suitcase 88. It immediately struck us as one of the most beautifully maintained and best sounding Suitcases we’d ever played. In the summer of 2016 we went back into Canterbury to sample it, and with the invaluable help of Adam King and Robbie Grunwald we got an amazing, authentic and dynamic sound. We recorded three different signals, the line-out, the tightly close mic’d speaker cabinet, and natural room ambience. That was just the beginning. After several months of painstaking editing, we finally have what we feel is the best sampled Rhodes available, presented as The Canterbury Suitcase.

                Do You Dream In Analogue?

The Attic : a project to document and sample interesting, characterful instruments that may not always be the obvious choice when we think of classics. Instruments which, when added to a track, instantly add some special magic, even if it is due to the fact that it sounds a bit cheap or quirky. We asked around some friendly producers: Neil Davidge, Adrian Utley and Liam Howe were all happy to open up their attics to us, and the resulting collection is a fascinating journey into the corners early analogue synthesis, offering a huge palette of sounds to reach into when you need colour, character and exuberance.

Hammersmith is great piano library, for pretty much any use. However you may not want or need the full 48GB package, either due to limited download bandwidth, or HDD requirements. Yes, 1TB of hard drive space is cheap, but that shouldn’t be an excuse to bloat one’s hard-drives with unnecessary content. Same as with Berlin Strings and LASS, I tried to retain all articulations and functions of the GUI, as well as compatibility with older Kontakt versions.

The ebow ( Energy bow), is a small, hand held device that ‘bows’ the strings of a guitar using an electromagnetic field. It produces a unique guitar sound, with a very slow attack and infinite sustain. To play the ebow, the guitarist holds it over the string, near the pickup or hole, so that the string sits in a small notch on the underside of the eBow. The eBow’s magnets then cause the string to vibrate until it feeds back on itself at its own resonant frequency. This feedback loop is very similar to the well-known amplifier feedback, but a much more controllable version. The player can vary the loudness of the sound by moving closer or further away from the string, as with amplifier feedback. The ebow is switchable from low power mode to high power mode, which gives a strong, harmonically rich sound.

Sampling the unique, magical sound of a Balinese Gamelan is no small undertaking. The 25 instruments that make up The London Symphony Orchestra’s Semara Dana Gamelan Ensemble had to be recorded in great detail, as if each were to be a sample library in its own right. A Gamelan is an ensemble of instruments originating in Indonesia. The majority of Gamelan instruments are percussive, and they include xylophone-like metallophones of different sizes and pitches, tuned gong chimes, very large pitched gongs and an assortment of drums and percussion. The two dominant types of Gamelan ensembles are Javanese and Balinese. Balinese Gamelan has a characteristic “shimmering” sound due to the detuning of paired instruments playing the same musical part.
