    TimeVerb-X is a new plugin from GSi that combines GSi’s “classic” Type4 spring reverb, first released in 2008, and a new algorithmic digital reverb. The “Type4” spring reverb emulation was originally inspired by an Accutronics reverb tank type 4, like those used in classic Hammond organs of the A100 series, also used in many famous electric guitar amplifiers. The digital reverb, instead, was first developed for the GSi Gemini sound module, but was also included in some Crumar hardware instruments. Both effects have been slightly expanded and further improved for the release of TimeVerb-X, as the spring reverb now features a self-oscillating feedback decay adjustment and a stereo width knob, and the digital reverb includes the early reflections section that was missing in the original project. Both reverbs put together make up a great sound when working in parallel, and create some interesting atmospheres when working in serial.

    Electric Bass was sampled from a Yamaha BB424x electric bass guitar. The bass was modified so that individual pickups were wired to independent jacks, thus allowing for independent sampling of the bridge and neck pickups. Volume and tone pots were bypassed, so resistors were wired in their place to minimize the “ice pick” sound of an electric bass without pots. The pickups were then run into individual Radial 48 active direct boxes and Grace 101 preamps, which provided additional gain. Sampling began by recording with the target of 4 velocity layers with 5 note round-robin. The strings of the bass were kept relatively bright and fresh. Nearly the entire bass was sampled in this manner, but the results were unsatisfactory, so the bass was re-sampled from the beginning with 10 velocity layers, 4-note round robin, and mellow strings.

    Upright bass was sampled from the pluckings of a gigging upright bass player. The bass itself was an inherited instrument from the musician’s grandfather. The exact age of the bass is not known, but it had seen some action, and although a little beat-up, still sounded great! To produce this library, the bass was sampled through a close-miced stereo pair of Shure SM81’s, an AKG D112, a Neumann Tlm 102 and a “di” bridge pickup. During mixing, it was decided that the SM81’s blended with the D112 gave the best overall tone. The bass was sampled over the course of a few 10 hour sessions, where the bass player played plucked notes, slap bass, and slides. Boy, did his fingers burn after those slides!
