This is something special. With an exciting new boxset in the shops any day now, the latest Electronic Sound cover stars are the magnificent Throbbing Gristle and we’re bundling the issue with a limited edition red vinyl seven-inch featuring two previously unreleased TG tracks, including one of the last two recordings the industrial pioneers ever made. We’re looking back over the story of Throbbing Gristle this issue, interviewing the surviving members of the band and others associated with TG. Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson ripped up all the rules, both sonically and visually, both as a live act and a recording unit. They are widely recognised as the prime movers of industrial music, but their influence and impact stretches way beyond any particular genre. Their early gigs attracted everybody from acid-fried hippies and spotty anarcho-punks to oddball alt-funkateers and hot-wired electronics freaks. There has never been another group even remotely like Throbbing Gristle.

This month’s Electronic Sound cover stars are the effortlessly sublime Air, who are currently on an extensive world tour to promote the deluxe edition of their landmark 1998 album ‘Moon Safari’. Performing inside a huge glass box that looks like something out of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin are playing the album live and in full for the first time – and the result is a major triumph. The French duo speak about the gorgeously languid and exquisitely produced ‘Moon Safari’ in our cover feature, as we assess the influence of a record that hit double platinum sales in the UK and remains an electronic masterpiece to this day. With big bells on.

We’re investigating the visual art of John Foxx in this month’s Electronic Sound. While he is best known as the frontman of Ultravox and a revered solo musician in his own right, Foxx is also a highly distinctive visual artist. He has worked in photography, collage, graphic art and other media since the mid-1970s, and his extraordinary portfolio is detailed in a forthcoming book called ‘Electricity And Ghosts’. We’ve invited him to talk about some of his favourite pieces from the book, and the result is a fascinating glimpse into his artistic approach and the aesthetic principles he applies to both his imagery and his records. You could describe it as a sort of synthesis of John Foxx. We have a bumper selection of other great interviews elsewhere in this issue too, including Jeff Mills, John Grant, Suzanne Ciani, Orbital, Wolfgang Tillmans, Low End Activist, Keeley Forsyth and Chanel Beads. We also have a splendid new regular column called “The Best Of…”, which we think you’re going to really love. Our first volunteer is μ-Ziq man and Planet Mu label boss Mike Paradinas, who speaks about peaches, thigh-high socks and geek pies. As you do.

This month’s Electronic Sound cover stars are the fabled White Noise – Delia Derbyshire, Brian Hodgson and David Vorhaus – and we’re bundling the magazine with a fantastic seven-inch featuring previously unreleased Radiophonic Workshop remixes of two killer tracks by the pioneering electronic supergroup. Radiophonic stalwarts Derbyshire and Hodgson formed White Noise with offbeat American musician Vorhaus in 1968. We’ve interviewed the band’s two surviving members for our cover feature, which is the story of their witchy and wonderful ‘An Electric Storm’ album. It’s an entertaining tale, with lots of strange twists and turns. Lots of sex and drugs as well. White Noise used reel-to-reel tapes and an early VCS 3 on the album, but it doesn’t sound the least bit dated. And while it wasn’t a commercial success on its release in 1969, it’s become hugely influential in the decades since, inspiring sonic adventurers like Throbbing Gristle, Aphex Twin, Broadcast and more.
