Mix Review Episode 3 TUTORiAL
FANTASTiC | 21 September 2018 | 2.12 GB
Want to know how professionals would mix a homemade Soul Pop track? Industry pro engineers, mixers and producers Bob Horn and Erik Reichers bring you yet another series where they take a recordist’s non-pro mix and import it side by side into their DAW, showing in-detail, how they would approach the mix, from start to radio-ready. Shot in Pro Tools, but applicable to any DAW, Bob and Erik start by playing you the mix of the song “Little Taste” by Xandra Lee and mixed by Chris Love, then discuss some of the mixing decisions Chris may have made along with mixing trends and the importance of acoustical room treatment. Bob and Erik then review Chris’ answers to their submission questions and Bob imparts incredible insight into choosing reference mixes and its pitfalls. Then it’s off to the mix, and the guys start with the drums, offering extensive advice and fixes, making the drum sounds into something truly special.
The variety of Bass sounds in the production are now discussed, including the more aggressive and dark sound they have, and how to make it fit with the 808’s in the song. Bob also shares some wisdom regarding compensating for bass room nodes in your listening environment.
Guitars and Synths are then dissected and optimized over the course of 6 separate videos, followed by 8 videos focusing on the all important vocal parts, making them shine and fit perfectly in the mix. The series is then wrapped up with an in-depth look at Master Bus processing, and a playback of their final mix of the song.
