The Elka Rhapsody 490 was a string machine, or string synthesizer, produced in the late 1970s. It was an Italian made instrument and was also sold under the brand name Hohner as the String Vox. The Hohner was distinguished from the Elka by its cream or beige colour, but were otherwise identical. It had an organ-based design using the octave divider technique, and was therefore fully polyphonic. It contained 2 modulation circuits that were used to produce the classic shimmering effect that string machines are known for.
Sounds
For the FK4, every note of both sounds — including the 2 sounds combined — have been sampled and seamlessly looped. Special care was taken when looping to include a complete cycle of the modulation effect. This way no more and no less sample data is used than necessary to replicate the original sound.Presets
The FK4 includes a few presets that play around with various parameters in Kontakt to create some new sounds from the samples. The main sounds however have their own buttons on the front panel.Effects
Some simple effects such as reverb, echo and phaser are included on the interface as well as a stereo effect that takes advantage of the sample offset parameter in Kontakt.Inside
